ORGANIC VITICULTURE

The vineyards are the key factor for the quality of organic wine. Both, the unique climate of valley ‘Els Alforins’ and the low yields, 3.000 kilos per hectare, are the two prerequisites to obtain high quality organic wine. The low yields not only improve the quality but also improve the sustainability of the vineyards being naturally more resistant to plagues.

Regarding the organic viticulture, the following treatments are applied at ‘Bodegas Los Frailes’. Instead of chemical fertilizers, the vineyards are treated with organic composts. The organic material, composted cellar residues and shredded wine shoots maintain the soil’s balance. Although organic regulations allow using copper sulphate, at ‘Bodegas Los Frailes’ we use Copper oxide, which has a lower copper content and is more active at low doses. The use of sulphur is permitted for treatment against oidium. Depending on the time of the year and the temperature we use sulphur dust or liquid sulphur.

As in all organic treatments, vigilance and timing is essential. To ensure these treatments reach the grapes, the wines are strictly kept under observation supported by a working plan approved by the regulatory council of organic agriculture of Valencia, Spain (CAE).
