FAMILY

At the end of century XVIII, the house, lands and cellar of ‘Casa Los Frailes’ were acquired by the family Velazquez from the religious friars, the Jesuits. In 1767, the Jesuits friars were expelled from Spain and its belongings were confiscated by Carlos III (King of Spain). A written manuscript reveals that four years later, our ancestors acquired the house, lands and cellar known as ‘Casa Los Frailes’- Friar house.

Since 1771, the house, lands and cellar have belonged to the family Velazquez without any interruption. This spirit of tradition, our commitment to produce quality wines and our aim for improvement has enhanced to undertake an ambitious project in 1999.

First, a reorganisation of the vineyards looking for the maximum potential of our most indigenous variety, Monastrell (with vineyards of more than 40 years old) and combination with new varieties (Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo, Garnacha, Shiraz). Second, looking for the most of our grapes, we reconverted the whole production to organic farming methods. Taking this challenge we have improved wines’ balance and produced healthy grapes free of residues that alter the aromatic components of the fruit, their taste and their natural texture. And third, we carried out an important modernisation of the old cellar and the construction of 3 new ones: one facility provided with the highest technology in the elaboration of wines, one barrel cellar and tasting room with capacity for 550 barrels, and a third one a bottle stocking cellar and bottling machine .

These projects aim us to make wines with great quality and with the personality of our 'terroir'.
